You optimize everything. Training, sleep, food, the supplements vetted across three studies before purchase. Then comes the synthetic base layer — worn against your skin for hours, soaked in sweat, and never given a second thought.
That blind spot is worth closing. The pollution synthetic clothing causes has been studied for decades. What it does to the person wearing it has not — a gap that matters most for those in contact with athletic synthetics every single day.

The health impacts
Toxic chemicals in clothing are not one problem but a spectrum of them, running from the trivial to the severe. The Global Alliance on Health and Pollution attributes roughly fifteen percent of premature deaths worldwide to toxic pollutants — the same broad category of compounds woven and finished into everyday garments.
The mild end is the skin: irritation, contact dermatitis, the allergic flare. Past that, the harm turns systemic. Endocrine disruptors imitate the body's own hormones and scramble the signals that govern fertility, fetal development, and metabolism. Heavy metals reach the organs, linked to liver and kidney damage, cardiovascular dysfunction, and impaired neurological function. At the far end sit the outcomes that justify the caution in the first place: neurotoxicity, genetic damage, and cancer.
No single garment delivers all of this, and no single wear is the threat. The danger is cumulative — a steady, low-grade intake from a material held against the body for most of a person's waking life.

Routes of exposure
The first route is direct. Chemicals built into a garment migrate onto and through the skin, and sweat speeds the passage — research suggests trace compounds cross into the bloodstream faster in the presence of moisture. Clothing is one of the few exposures measured not in seconds but in hours.
The second is indirect. The same chemistry that ends up against the skin also leaves the factory in water and air, cycles through the environment, and re-enters through what people drink and breathe. The garment is only the most intimate point of contact.
The chemicals of concern
A handful of chemical families do most of the damage.
PFAS are added for water resistance and durability — which is exactly why athletic and outdoor wear carries more of them. They are linked to reduced fertility, developmental effects in children, and elevated cancer risk, and they persist in the body and the environment for years.
Heavy metals like lead and chromium are used to fix and stabilize dye color. On contact with skin they are associated with contact dermatitis and increased cancer risk, and they leave the garment through washing and wear.
Endocrine disruptors are the most documented of all. The Center for Environmental Health tested activewear from brands including Nike, Athleta, Adidas, and Patagonia and found garments that could expose wearers to up to forty times California's safe limit for BPA, the hormone-mimicking compound capped under Proposition 65 at three micrograms a day. The detail that matters most: the BPA turned up only in polyester-based clothing containing spandex. The problem tracked the material itself.
Flame retardants, also endocrine disruptors, are added to most garments and required in children's clothing. They absorb through the skin and are linked to infertility, neurotoxicity, and cancer.
Carcinogens and irritants round out the list — formaldehyde, azo dyes, benzothiazole, volatile organic compounds. These are not inert. Studies show compounds like benzothiazole can release from textiles, penetrate the skin, and enter the body, causing everything from irritation to genetic damage.
The alternative
No one controls every exposure in a modern life. But you can control the one pressed against your skin while you train.
A 100% natural fibre removes these families at the source. No water-repellent PFAS finish. No metal-based dye fixing. No flame-retardant chemistry. No plastic to carry bisphenols. The exposure isn't reduced — it never enters the garment.
The honest part, said out loud: natural fibres can be treated with toxic chemicals during processing. "Natural" on a label guarantees nothing by itself. What a garment is made of matters, and so does how it's made. That second part is where we do our work — clean processing, no shortcuts — and it's why we account for both.

Reducing exposure
You train to be healthier. The clothing you train in shouldn't quietly work against that. Of all the variables you manage in pursuit of a best effort, this is among the simplest to get right.
