Every synthetic garment begins as crude oil. Petrochemicals are refined into polymers, drawn into long chains, spun into thread, and woven into cloth — which is to say a polyester shirt is a plastic product with the supply chain of one. Close to 70% of clothing is now synthetic, and polyester alone accounts for nearly 60% of global production.
That origin sets the terms for everything that follows. A material made from fossil fuels is energy-intensive to produce, chemical-heavy to process, and permanent once discarded. The cost is steep, and worth understanding before the next purchase.

Resource consumption
It starts with extraction. Synthetics draw down finite fossil fuels for raw material, then draw down water at a scale few industries match — fashion is the second-largest industrial consumer of fresh water on earth, using 215 trillion liters a year, the equivalent of 86 million Olympic swimming pools. A material born from petroleum and produced at that volume was never going to be cheap for the planet, whatever it costs on the rack.
Water pollution
About 20% of the world's clean water pollution comes from textile dyeing and finishing. Wet processing is brutally chemical-heavy — producing a single kilogram of fabric can take more than half a kilogram of chemical input — and across much of the world the spent water, thick with dyes, heavy metals, and persistent pollutants, is dumped straight into ditches, streams, and rivers. The color on a cheap shirt is paid for downstream, by people who never bought it.
Microplastic pollution
Synthetic fabric is plastic, and plastic breaks into smaller plastic. Synthetic textiles account for as much as 35% of the microplastics entering the ocean, and a single load of laundry can shed up to 700,000 microfibres. They are too small to filter out, and because they do not biodegrade, once they reach the water they stay — working their way up the food chain, from plankton to fish to the people who eat them.
Waste
85% of all textiles end up in the dump each year. The equivalent of a garbage truck full of clothing is burned or sent to landfill every second of every day, and synthetic fibres do not biodegrade. They sit, and shed, and stay.
One number cuts the other way, and it's worth noting: if a garment were simply worn twice as long, emissions from clothing would fall by 44 percent. Durability isn't a luxury feature. It's an environmental strategy. A garment built to last years instead of weeks does real work for the planet by refusing to fall apart.
Emissions
Because synthetics are made from fossil fuels, their carbon cost is built in before a garment is ever sewn. Polyester production for textiles generated more than 700 billion kilograms of CO2 equivalent as far back as 2015, and the figure has climbed every year since as production has surged. Producing polyester releases two to three times more carbon than cotton — and unlike cotton, it never returns to the earth. The pollution, the contaminated water, the waste, and the emissions add up to a single verdict: a material that worsens the climate at every stage of its life and breaks down at none.
The alternative
Run the harms backward and the answer is a natural fibre.
Renewable instead of extracted — a fleece grows back every year on grass and sunshine. Biodegradable instead of permanent — 100% merino breaks down by 95% within fifteen weeks in soil, returning nitrogen and carbon to the ground rather than plastic to the sea. Built to last instead of built to be replaced, which is the most useful environmental property a garment can have.
